What is the economizer in boiler ?

The term economizer comes from the word economy. That means, it is an equipment that resolves the economic purpose or saves the money. Economizers are used in boiler to save the heat or in other words, to utilize the wasted heat.

Economizers are installed in the boilers in such a way, that they can prevent the fuel or water from entering into them. Hot gases which are produced during the operation of boiler heats up the water, and finally converts it into steam. After this operation, some heat is wasted which is almost unavoidable. That’s where the role of an economizer begins.

The economizer diverts this waste heat to the storage of cold water and pre heats the cold water, but not to the boiling point. The enthalpy of the cold water is increased by this operation and during the main heating process the amount of heat needed to convert the water to steam reduces.

Hence the use of fuel also reduces. The main advantage of an economizer is that, it increases the efficiency of a boiler significantly and also the life span. The running cost is also reduced.
